We’ve got eggs!!

After more than twenty-one long weeks and a lot of chicken drama, we’ve begun to get eggs.

When chickens first start laying there is a lot of abnormality for the newly maturing ladies.

Our very first egg was a soft shelled egg that had broken on the pine shavings when laid, and it looked as though the chickens ate the insides a bit, so there wasn’t much to take a picture of. But after a few more days our girl Rose laid us the beauty you see above and below.

We couldn’t get Rose to look up for a picture, but she was very proud. She sang the loudest egg laying song ever to announce she was going to lay right before she did, so I was able to get her egg still warm from the nesting box!

The next day we found two more soft shelled eggs. I think they were laid by Tulip and Marigold, but I’m not positive as they were there at dawn when I let the hens out of their coop. It was wet and rainy that day, as you can see by how wet my hand is in the picture below.

You can see what I mean by soft shells. They are literally soft and the one on the right also had been punctured slightly by the shavings. I brought them in though and opened them up to see what was inside.

The one on the left was completely whole, with no punctures and you can see it is a beautiful (no filter) egg with all its whites and what have you. I actually pinched and pealed away some skin to break the egg open. The one on the right was the one that had been punctured by the shavings. I ripped it open and you can see that it lost most of its whites.

I’m sure you can eat these soft shelled eggs, but I just didn’t think I wanted to, so I ended up scrambling them and feeding them to the chickens.

The next day we got another regular hard shelled egg. All of these eggs have been pretty small but they were from my very own chickens. So two eggs seemed pretty good for the next days breakfast.

So when I went out at dawn again, I found a soft shelled egg, and then a few hours later I found a third hard shelled egg. This one was in the run, I don’t know what’s going on there, but we now had three small eggs. So this morning I fried them up!

Three small eggs! Look at those beautiful yolks! And I love how the light makes a gold ring around the inner edge of the pan in the bacon grease. It reminds me of an eclipse!

The eggs were divine. We are so happy our girls are growing up. I’m pretty sure we are still waiting on two more girls to even begin laying, as they do not have many of the maturity signs. Things such as bright red combs and waddles, squatting for me when I get near, and going in and out of the nesting boxes. But as the days get cooler and shorter I am interested to see how our girls provide for us.

Here are all the ladies in my little make-shift “chicken playpen,” so they can free range without leaving our yard or going in my garden beds. It only sort of works. LOL

September Hiatus at The Manifest Nest!

What a whirlwind Hurricane Irma has been. I hope that each and every one of you are healthy and well. I know that many of you either sustained some damage from the storm or know someone who has, my heart goes out to each and every one of you.

In the wake of Irma I am not going to have any events, classes or farmer’s markets until October! I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have for any of you, but please know that I am here at the Apothecary if anyone needs anything.

I know that I have been feeling a bit emotionally taxed, stressed, and that my adrenals and immune system are both suffering because of it. I have a great supply of herbal needs at this time should you be feeling similar and need some herbal support.

I have my Restorative Tincture that is full of adaptogens to help the body deal with and overcome the side effects of stress. Both my husband and I have been taking this 2x a day and it has really helped.

I have both Fire Cider Tonic and Elderberry Syrup to help your body boost immunity and to fight off any cold or flu symptoms.

I have a few new products as well!

I have a Skin Bliss balm that is specific for rashes, eczema and psoriasis.

I also made a batch of Herbal Insect Repellent which is great for all the bugs that have been around after all this water and flooding. (And don’t forget my Anti-Itch Salve if the bugs have already gotten you.)

Again, I hope that all of you are recovering physically and emotionally from the storm, and if you can help your neighbors and friends as they recover, please do so.

Take time for yourself as well: get a massage, go to the chiropractor, watch a funny movie, get some ice cream that wasn’t lost in the power outage, and nourish your body with whole foods and herbs. Whatever soothes your soul do so.

Hurricane season is only half over, and even when it is not natural disasters at our door, the universe will send us challenges that help us to grow and expand. Sometimes, it is necessary to retreat inward in order to find the strength to grow and expand and that is ok too.

Again, please don’t hesitate to contact me should you need any herbal products or an herbal consultation. You can find more information here.

Kind thoughts,
Heather

***Update! No Market Saturday!

***Update! No market today, Saturday 3/25/17!

I am on the upswing, but I know deep down that I do not have the energy to go to market today. It takes a lot in this fast paced, goal oriented, business first world to listen to and to honor that voice that resides deep down inside of each of us telling us when to say no. I know that for me this has been a long struggle, and I am working diligently to get more in touch with this voice. Sometimes I hear it loudest when I am physically unwell…

So, as I humbly say no to the market, I also want to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to any of you in need of herbal remedies and love. I want you all to know that I always have products available at the Apothecary. Just call or text me at 808-782-5406, and we can coordinate your visit to get what you need.

I will be at market next in April: Wednesday 4/5/17 — Friday 4/7/17 — Saturday 4/8/17 which I will announce more thoroughly at the beginning of the month.

Thank you all for understanding, and may this validate your own need to listen deeply to that voice that knows what is best for us in every situation, and may you have the strength to follow that voice.

Hello everyone! Hope you are all enjoying these first few days of Spring!

I wanted to update y’all on this week’s markets. I will not be at Wednesday’s or Friday’s markets, as I have been feeling a bit under the weather. I am hoping that all my herbal allies will help me nip this feeling quickly in the bud, so that I can make it to the Saturday market! Keep your eye here on the blog or check our Facebook Page to see when we will be at Market this week.

If you have ever wondered what an herbalist takes when she is feeling under the weather, I can tell you that I have been taking my Cold and Flu Tincture which is immune supporting and antibacterial and antiviral with Echinacea and Goldenseal Root! I’ve also been taking Elderberry Syrup to support my immunity and give my throat a nice soothing coat. Finally, I drink LOTS of herbal tea. Mostly I’ve been drinking my Immuni-tea Blend with an added bit of Goldenseal Root Powder every pot or so. I get lots of rest, fresh air and tend to burn sage to kill germs that reside in the house.

I’d love to hear what some of you do when you are under the weather, so comment below!

Hope you all stay happy and healthy!

Cold and Flu Needs at the Local Farmer’s Markets!

Today and tomorrow are the last two Farmer’s Markets for the Manifest Nest until March! I just can’t believe how fast this year is already passing! And spring is definitely here at the Beaches, as my peach tree is in full bloom!

Today is the Grand Opening of the Atlantic Beach City Market, aka the ABC Market! I am honored to be participating! The ABC Market is located at New Friendship Church on the corner of Mayport and Dutton Island Roads. Market Hours are 3-6pm.

Tomorrow is the Beaches Green Market at Jarboe Park in Neptune Beach on the corner of 3rd Street and Florida Blvd. Market Hours are 2-5pm.

It would appear that there are many of you feeling a bit under the weather so, I’ve been diligently making your cold and flu needs.

I have a new batch of Fire Cider Tonic and a Fire Cider Tonic Especial that has fresh, organic turmeric root in it! The taste is nearly the same, but the benefits are increased. Both will help to keep your digestive system and circulatory system pumping, while also containing many anti-virals and anti-bacterials to fight off any germs. The turmeric root will also help with inflammation throughout the body. It is also full of antioxidants and a powerful immune enhancer.

I have Elderberry Syrup and Immuni-tea full of immune boosting herbs to help your body fight any germs that may have gotten you already and to help your body prevent them taking ahold. I know I’ve been taking it 2-3x a day, as more and more people have been coming by sick to the apothecary!

I also have Cold and Flu tincture, which I believe to be our strongest cold and flu remedy. These are the herbal big guns. When you know you are sick this tincture can really help your body fight. The goldenseal root is one of nature’s natural antibiotics and the two kinds of echinacea help dry up mucus and boost your immune system.

I also have lots of other lovely herbal products, and will have a bit of the garden’s abundance with me! Come on by and see all the things our local farmers, bakers, and other artisans have to share with you!
